Facebook to Officially Change its Name
After eroding our social, mental and civic well-being Zuckerberg is back with a new branding campaign. According to Independent the app will continue to be known as Facebook, but branding will likely disappear from everywhere else. Facebook announced recently that they will now be known as “Meta” and the logo will be replaced with a blue M. Author Douglas Rushkoff found this problematic stating “This isn’t intended to be some casual digital simulation we enter and leave at will. Zuckerberg wants the metaverse to ultimately encompass the rest of our reality… while totally subsuming what we think of as the real world.” He further explains that “We learn to downgrade our experience of being together with another human being to seeing their projection overlaid into the room like an augmented reality Pokémon figure.” Harsh words that ramp up a long opinion piece negating the positives of having a new online space. But in reality, how can we now trust this tech giant with our time and energy again? Well only time will tell how much trust people can put back into the company after it rolls out such an immersive new experience.
